I booked the highlights day trip from Shanghai mainly for the West Lake sunset and it delivered. The itinerary was timed smartly, indoor temple and town earlier, then out on the lake at golden hour with the pagoda glowing. Our guide knew the exact quay to stop at for the classic view and did not rush us off it. Flexible on lunch when we mentioned the vegetarian option, sorted in a minute. Back at the station with plenty of margin for the train home. Driver was steady and careful. If you want a taste of Hangzhou from Shanghai in one day, this is a solid pick.

Glad the timing worked, George. Chasing golden hour on West Lake is a bit of a gamble but the pagoda really does come alive then. Good sign our guide picked the right quay to pull up at - that last stretch of the day is the one worth slowing down for.
