Your three days in the Huangshan area start when your guide meets you in the lobby of your hotel in Huangshan, holding a Your Way Holiday sign. After a short welcome you set out toward the old villages around the mountain. Your guide outlines the plan for the day and the places you will see, so the drive and the walking time make sense from the start.

The first stop is Hongcun Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its preserved Ming and Qing houses and the layout that threads water through the whole settlement. Stone lanes run between whitewashed walls, and open channels connect the houses to the ponds at the center. Your guide walks the main lanes with you and explains how the village was planned around its water system and how the older houses were built.

Near the middle of the village sits Moon Pond, a small crescent-shaped pool ringed by houses and old trees. The water that feeds it comes from the same channels that run through the village, and the reflection across the pond is the shot most visitors stop for. Your guide shows you both banks and explains how the pond fits into the daily life and drainage of the old settlement.

A short walk on takes you to Chengzhitang, one of the best-preserved ancestral halls in Hongcun, built for a wealthy family and carved across its beams and panels. The woodwork is the point of interest here, and your guide points out the carved figures and the layout of the courtyard rooms. It is a good place to see how a merchant household in the region once lived.

From Chengzhitang your guide walks you to Nanhu Academy, a school hall built for Confucian study and the examinations. The rooms open onto quiet courtyards with old inscriptions on the walls. Your guide explains how students trained here and what the academy meant to families in the village, then gives you time to look through the hall at your own pace.

At midday your guide stops at a local restaurant for a simple Anhui lunch. Two dishes you will likely see on the menu are Huangshan hairy tofu and drunken crab, both tied to the cooking of this part of Anhui. Your guide helps you order and explains what you are eating, and the meal gives everyone a break before the afternoon.

In the afternoon you visit Tunxi Old Street, the old trading lane in Huangshan city lined with two-story wooden shopfronts from the Ming and Qing periods. Tea houses, medicine shops and craft stores still open onto the flagstone path. Your guide talks through how the street worked as a market route and how the shopfronts and carvings have been kept in use rather than rebuilt as a set.

The last stop is the Hu Kaiwen Ink-stick Factory, a workshop that has made traditional Chinese ink sticks for calligraphy and painting. A visit covers how the ink is mixed, hammered, molded and finished, and you can watch artisans at the benches doing the work. Your guide explains why these ink sticks carry a name in Chinese art and how the craft has been passed down.

By evening your guide and driver bring you back to your hotel in Huangshan and help you settle in. The rest of the night is on your own, a good time to rest before the climb into the mountains on the next day.
On the second morning your guide picks you up at your hotel in Huangshan and drives you to the mountain scenic area. At the base your guide handles the tickets and the boarding for the Yungu Cable Car, which lifts you up the side of the range in a few minutes and saves several hours of climbing. From the cable car the slopes, rock walls and pine-covered ridges open up below you.
From the upper station your guide walks you to Shixin Peak, also called Beginning-to-Believe Peak, a viewpoint the locals treat as the first real sight of the mountain. The name comes from the idea that only when you reach this view do you truly begin to believe what Huangshan looks like. Paved paths lead past granite outcrops, wind-pruned pines and a valley that often fills with moving cloud. Your guide sets a steady pace and leaves time at the platform before you move on.

The path continues to Magical Brushwork, a slender rock pillar topped by a cluster of pine, which gives the formation its name, a writing brush set upright. Around it the slopes drop away on several sides, and the pillars of the range stand out across the gap. Your guide shows you the angle that reads most like a brush and explains the legends attached to the rock.

For lunch your guide takes you to a restaurant on the upper path. The kitchen works with mountain ingredients, and a standing dish here is braised Wenzheng Mountain bamboo shoots, a specialty of this part of Anhui. Your guide helps you order and explains the dishes, and the meal is the main rest before the afternoon walking.

In the afternoon you reach Bright Summit, one of the highest points on the range at 1,861 meters (6,109 feet). On a clear day it looks out over the surrounding peaks and the deep valleys between them. Your guide talks through the rock you can see from the top and the place this summit holds in Chinese landscape painting, then gives you time to take in the view.

The last stop before you head in is Flying-over Rock, a large block that sits on the ledge at a slight tilt, so it looks as if it has just landed there and might tip over. Like several features on the range, it takes its name from that first impression. Your guide explains how weather and time shaped the block and where it sits along the old path.

When the walking is done for the day your guide brings you to your hotel on the mountain ridge. Staying up here means you wake close to the sunrise viewpoints and the routes for Day 3 instead of climbing from the base again. Your guide helps you check in and confirms the plan for the following day, then you have the evening to rest.
The third day starts early with breakfast at your mountain hotel, then your guide walks you to a sunrise viewpoint on the ridge before dawn. As the sun comes up the mist lifts off the valley and the granite walls and pines along the ridge take color. Your guide picks the platform that faces the right way for the morning and gives you time to watch the light move across the range.

After breakfast your guide takes you onto the West Sea Grand Canyon, the loop of plank paths and staircases that runs along the cliff walls on the western side of the range. The canyon drops between steep rock faces, with pine growing out of the seams and cloud moving through the gap below the path. Your guide keeps to the open sections and points out the rock formations as you work around the rings.

Lunch is a set of local Huangshan dishes. The two to try are steamed chicken, known as Qingzheng Ji, cooked simply with ginger, garlic and soy so the flavor stays in the meat, and stinky mandarin fish, Chou Gui Yu, a mild-fermented freshwater fish from Anhui that tastes far milder than the name suggests. Your guide helps you order and explains what each dish is.

In the afternoon your guide walks you to Lion Peak, named for the long rock outcrop along its ridge that reads like a resting lion from the viewing point. At 1,835 meters (6,016 feet) it stands above the surrounding slopes and looks back across the peaks you have covered over the two days. Your guide explains how the rock took that shape and points out the other summits in the view.

To finish the day your guide takes you down by the Yungu Cable Car, which carries you from the upper station back to the base of the mountain. At the bottom your guide and driver meet you and transfer you back to your hotel in Huangshan. If you need a later drop-off or help with onward plans, tell your guide and they will arrange it with you.
Day 1 is the villages around the mountain, Hongcun, Tunxi Old Street and the Hu Kaiwen ink workshop, with a night in Huangshan city. Day 2 goes up by the Yungu Cable Car to Shixin Peak, Magical Brushwork and Bright Summit, and sleeps at a hotel on the mountain. Day 3 takes the sunrise, the West Sea Grand Canyon and Lion Peak, then comes down by cable car and returns to your hotel in Huangshan.
The village and old-street days are gentle flat walking. On the mountain you walk on paved paths, stone steps and the plank trails of the West Sea Grand Canyon, with the cable cars handling the long ascent and descent. The pace suits most travelers who are comfortable with stairs over a full day.
The two city nights and the cable car rides keep it workable for many older travelers, but the West Sea Grand Canyon on Day 3 has steep steps and cliff paths. It is not a good match for very young children or for anyone who cannot manage long stair climbs.
Day 2 ends at a hotel on the upper ridge. Rooms are simpler than city hotels and some have shared bathrooms, but staying there puts you at the sunrise viewpoints and the Day 3 trails without a pre-dawn climb from the base.
The tour begins and ends at your hotel in Huangshan, and a guide meets you in the lobby holding a Your Way Holiday sign. If you want a different meeting point, or a drop-off other than your hotel, let us know when you book so it can be arranged.
Strong wind, heavy rain or ice can close the cable cars or parts of the mountain trails. Your guide reorders the day to keep you on open paths and, where the mountain becomes unsafe, adjusts the plan and explains your options on the day.
At Your Way Holiday, we strive to enhance the depth and flexibility of your travel experience by offering a range of optional additions to our core tour itineraries. Our itineraries are designed to provide exceptional flexibility, allowing you to tailor your journey according to your preferences. Select from a variety of activities and experiences to enrich your itinerary, ensuring a personalized adventure that perfectly aligns with your interests. Three days was the right call for Huangshan. We did the mountain first while the weather was clear and caught the sea of clouds at Bright Summit early on the second morning, worth the cold and the 5am alarm. The third day slowed things down with the ancient villages which was a nice change of pace. Our guide kept adjusting for the clouds and we barely got wet. Cable cars and hotels were all sorted ahead so we just walked and looked.
We had an amazing experience visiting Hongcun Village, Tunxi Old Street, and the stunning Huangshan peaks. The tour guide was fantastic, speaking excellent English and sharing fascinating stories about the history and culture of each site. The driver was also great, the car was spotless, and he drove very safely on the winding mountain roads, which made our trip stress-free with kids. We really appreciated how well the itinerary was arranged, letting us see all the highlights without feeling rushed. Overall, the company’s communication was smooth and flexible, responding quickly to our questions before the trip. Highly recommended for families.

Our guild David picked us up in the train station. David and one driver come with a mini van to drive us around. I think it is very convenient to have a car with you, especially in China. There are so many people there. Also in Huangshan area, it is far from the city. The public transportation is not that easy. David are very patient with us and very flexible with our rout. David did an amazing job tour us around, checking out popular places. I was blown away by his knowledge of Yellow mountain and other history with regards to the sites that we visited. He was funny, friendly, and very personable. We stayed in the hotel in the city the first night. The second day we went up to the mountain. It was raining at that day. David stopped at a local shop for us to buy rain coat and shoe covers. The shoe covers was very helpful. Highly recommended if it is a raining day for your. David accompanied with us all the way up to the Huangshan. My son wanted to go up some place and my wife just wanted to stay, so he accompanied with my son to some higher point. Thanks David for that. The next day we come down. We took the cable car up and down. It saved a lot of time and energy so you can walk around on the top of the mountain. David also took us to the local village (Old Street) for waling around. He just walked with us and introduced local specials. He did not push or ask us to buy anything. I though that was very special since I heard a lot about the tourist guy asking people to buy things. We had one of the most memorable and enjoyable vacations that we've ever had. We owe this pleasure to China Private Tour, to our guide David and to the great driver.

Hi Lourdes, having your own car and driver makes getting around Huangshan so much easier with the crowds, glad David and the driver had you sorted from the station on. Thanks for sharing!

China Private Tour provided everything I could possibly want with a private, customized tour of Huangshan. We contacted CPT following friends recommendation, they got back to us quickly with a full detailed plan with photos of what we should expect (in real life all looked much better than the photos). We were treated like royalty at each stop. We spent 2.5 days with our guide David. We are a family with three girls ages 11, 14, 16 from US, we loved every minute and every selection David did. We spent the first half day in Hongcun village which was very picturesque and then went on to a day and a half in the Yellow mountains. David arranged the top hotel on the mountain (need to book in advance), made sure we see as much as we can, woke up at 4:30am to direct us to try and see the sunrise, made sure that during the day we see as much as possible and when we had time for lunch choose tasty fun places. He made our experience perfect, took best care of us and made sure all is in place, transportation, accommodation, gastronomy etc.. his explanations are clear, he is of an optimistic nature, enjoys what he is doing and understands his customers and cares for them. He is HIGHLY recommended in Huangshan.

Thank you for working so closing with me to plan our tour. Four of us had a wonderful time in Yellow Mountain. Everything you scheduled for us went well and I would like to share our experience on your website. We were lucky enough to go on a tour with John. He was very prompt in meeting us at the designated times at our hotel and very knowledgeable in the history and government of the places we visited. He had very good English, and was the best English-speaker of our four tour guides in this china trip. John had a very good sense of humor and was easy to talk to. He gave us plenty of free time to do things on our own, which we liked and was very flexible with the day's touring schedule. He even gave us options at the beginning of each day for us to plan our own itinerary. Mount Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) is no doubt one of the most beautiful mountains in China. However for us senior travelers, walking up and down the countless stone steps was quite challenging. It was a good arrangement for staying three days and two nights on the mountain, and the Huangshan Xihai Hotel was great. We then visited three remarkable ancient villages that are the best examples of ancient Huizhou-style architecture. The famous Oscar-winner film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon were filmed there. The hotel Crown Plaza Huangshan Yucheng was great. The morning walk along the Xin"anjiang River by the hotel was so refreshing. We would very definitely recommend this company to any of our friends who might be planning a trip to China or Huangshan in the future.

The itinerary of our 3-day Huangshan tour was well arranged and our guide did a good job of explaining some facts about Yellow Mountain.
