Your guide meets you at the lobby of your hotel in Huangshan, holding a Your Way Holiday sign, and with the driver takes you out to begin a two-day winter tour built around the old villages and the hot springs near the city. It is an easy first day: a historic village in the morning, old streets and a long lunch, and the warm spring water at the end.
The morning visit is Hongcun Village, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its old Hui architecture and the water that runs through it. Hongcun is laid out in the shape of an ox, with the central waterway meant to stand for the body and the ponds for the head. Around the water, white-walled houses with black tile roofs, carved wooden beams and small courtyards show how families lived here generations ago, and your guide walks the lanes and explains what you are seeing.
In Hongcun you stop at Yuezhao, the Moon Pond, a still crescent-shaped pool in the middle of the village. On a calm morning the old houses and trees are mirrored in its surface, which is the view Hongcun is most often photographed from. The pond was dug to balance the water and the layout of the village, and your guide explains its place in the design. Low bridges cross its ends, and the paths around it are easy to walk.
Back in the city you visit Tunxi Old Street, a shopping lane in the centre of Huangshan with wooden shopfronts that date to the Ming and Qing dynasties. After breakfast your guide drives you to the Yungu Cable Car and you ride up onto Huangshan. The granite peaks, old pines and cloud-filled valleys are the reason for the trip. Your first stop is Shixin Peak, also called Beginning-to-Believe Peak, named for how the rock shapes here look too neat to be natural. From the peak your guide points out the famous granite forms and tells the old stories attached to them as you walk the ridge.
Next you reach the rock known as Dream Brush Blooming Flowers, where a lone pine grows from a stone pillar and the whole shape reads like a brush set on a desk.
