Your private three-day tour begins when you arrive in Huangshan. Your local guide meets you at your hotel in Huangshan city, holding a Your Way Holiday sign, and helps you check in and settle. The rest of the first day is free to rest or walk around the old town on your own.
Today your guide takes you to the Huangshan scenic area, the main mountain sight of the region. The day runs in this order: a drive to the scenic area, the Yungu Cable Car to the top, Beginning-to-Believe Peak, Brush Pen Peak, lunch, the Xihai Grand Canyon and Cloud-dispelling Pavilion, then the cable car back down and a drive to your hotel in Tunxi.
After breakfast your guide drives you to Mt Huangshan, about an hour away. At the Yungu cable station you ride up to the top, and the first peak on the path is Beginning-to-Believe Peak, at 1,683 meters above sea level. Tradition holds that a Ming-dynasty writer named Huang Xiyuan reached this peak from the Yungu Temple and, struck by the view, gave it the name Begin-to-Believe. It is one of the best points on the mountain for seeing the pines that grow out of the rock.
A walk of about one kilometer takes you to Brush Pen Peak, at 1,650 meters. A pointed spur of rock rises here and splits at the top like the tip of a writing brush held upright, which is how the peak gets its name. Your guide shows you the angle that reads most like a brush.
After lunch you visit the Xihai Grand Canyon, also called the White Cloud Canyon because the cloud that gathers here drifts past the ledges like water. The canyon runs for about 15 kilometers along the western side of the range. Your guide walks a section with you, and on a clear day you can stop for the sunset at the nearby Cloud-dispelling Pavilion.
When the day is done you ride the cable car back down by the same route, and your guide drives you to your hotel in Tunxi, the old town of Huangshan city, for the night.
After breakfast, check out from your hotel and transfer to Shexian for the architecture culture day. Shexian is a famous historical and cultural city, once the political, economic and cultural centre of ancient Huizhou and the birthplace of Huizhou culture. It is known for its distinctive Huizhou-style buildings and is called the "hometown of Chinese archways". Your guide will take you to the most representative villages and sites of the county, including Tangyue Memorial Archways, Tangmo Ancient Village and Huizhou Ancient Town.
Your first stop is the Tangyue Memorial Archways. Tangyue is a representative work of ancient Huizhou architecture from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The group reflects the core ethics of Huizhou culture and carries a long record of human history behind each carved stone face. Every archway marks a real story of a family or an event, and your guide will explain the meaning of each one as you walk through them.
Next, continue to Tangmo Ancient Village, ranked among the top ten scenic spots in Huangshan City. The village was first laid out in the Tang dynasty (618-907) in the architectural style of that era, and it reached its height of prosperity in both the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. Here you can see a quiet rural way of life and the natural setting that grew up around this historic and cultural village.
You will have lunch at a nearby local restaurant, where you can try simple Huizhou home cooking before the afternoon visits.
In the afternoon, visit Huizhou Ancient Town, also known as Shexian Ancient Town. It is the birthplace of "Hui style literature", one of the three major regional schools of learning in China. The town holds seven representative sites, among them Hui Garden, the Xuguo Memorial Archway, the Yuliang water dam, Doushan Street, the Xin'an Stele Forest and the Tao Xingzhi Memorial Hall, set among more than 400 memorial archways. Your guide will walk you through the streets and the history of Huizhou culture.
