Day 1: Shanghai to Huangshan

Train from Shanghai to Huangshan

Your five-day trip starts where you are staying: your guide meets you at your Shanghai hotel and takes you to the station for the high-speed train to Huangshan. At Huangshan High-Speed Railway Station, follow the signs to the arrivals gate, where your local guide waits holding a “Your Way Holiday” signboard. From the station, the region opens up: granite peaks to the west and old villages along the river.

Day 2: Huangshan

Greeting-guests Pine

The day starts at the Greeting-guests Pine, the leaning pine that has become the calling card of Huangshan. It has stood on this slope for more than a thousand years, one branch thrust out like an arm raised in welcome. Your guide tells how painters and poets have drawn on it for centuries as a sign of friendship. Around the tree, the cliffs and clouded peaks give a first taste of the mountain granite and the hardy pines that grip it.

Lotus Peak

Next comes Lotus Peak, the highest and best-known summit of Huangshan, named for a shape that recalls an opening lotus flower. A Taste of Huangshan

Day 3:Huangshan

Sunrise at Bright Summit

In the cold clear air the sky turns orange over the jagged ridges. Your guide talks through the legends of Huangshan and why painters and poets have returned to these peaks for centuries. It is a fine spot for photographs, so keep your camera ready as the light changes.

Flying-over Rock

After sunrise, walk on to Flying-over Rock, a great boulder balanced on the cliff edge so it looks as if it is skimming off into space. Your guide explains how the granite cracked and settled into this shape and tells the local tale behind its name. From the ledge below there is a clear view of the drop and the rugged peaks beyond. Along the way your guide points out the thin soil pines and the small plants and birds that live on the mountain.

Two More Local Plates

For a taste of the region, your guide brings up two more dishes. Wenzheng Mountain bamboo shoots are tender and light, cut fresh on the slopes around Huangshan and usually stir-fried or braised, and they are a seasonal specialty. Drunken crab is a bolder plate: live crab soaked in rice wine with spices, served cool, so the sweet flesh carries the aroma of the wine. Hongcun Village

Day 4: Huangshan

Tangyue Memorial Archways

Set against a quiet hillside, the archways show the stonecraft of old Huizhou, and give a clear sense of the families and generations behind them.

Tangmo Ancient Village

Next is Tangmo, an old village more than 800 years deep in history and once a stop for Huizhou merchants. Your guide walks you along lanes of whitewashed walls and black-tiled roofs, past carved doorways and shaded courtyards. The Tangmo River runs through the settlement, and its banks are the best place for a photograph. Your guide explains how the water shaped trade and daily life here, and leaves time to browse the small shops for crafts and keepsakes.

Steamed Chicken and Shaobing

Later you reach Huizhou Ancient Town, a well-preserved old street plan that shows how this region lived and traded. Back to Your Hotel

Day 5: Xin'an River

Along the Xin'an River

On the last morning, walk out along the Xin'an River. Your guide takes you along the bank, where the water mirrors the hills and the green terraces above it. Rape Flower Fields

Expect several hours of steady uphill and downhill and wear shoes with grip. The pace is set to you, and your guide builds in rests at the viewpoints.

Are meals included?

When is the best time to go for the flowers?

The Huangshan countryside puts on its yellow rapeseed bloom in spring, with the best fields usually from late March into April. If you are not chasing flowers, the mountain is pleasant from April to November, and clear days give the best views over the sea of clouds.
