The first stop is South Lake Academy, an old academy beside South Lake that was built during the Ming Dynasty. It served as a place of study and a center of Confucian learning in the region. Its wooden halls, carved panels, and courtyards are still well preserved, and the setting by the water reflects the traditional respect for harmony between scholars and nature. Your guide explains how the academy shaped local culture and names some of the figures who studied here.
Next is Moon Pond (Yuezhao), a crescent-shaped pond at the heart of the village, ringed by whitewashed houses with black-tiled roofs. Huizhou Zongzi is a glutinous rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, filled with savory pork, chestnuts, or sweet red bean paste. After the break, the group visits Chengzhi Hall, a late-Qing residence often called the "Folk Forbidden City" for its size and detail. The hall once belonged to a wealthy merchant family and has more than sixty rooms with wood carvings, brickwork, and Anhui-style courtyards. Your guide walks the group through the rooms and explains how the hall served both as a home and as a place for family ceremonies, and how the carvings on the panels and beams carry symbols of good fortune.
The last stop is the Wang Family Ancestral Hall, a Ming-period hall built to honor the ancestors of the Wang clan. It was used for family rituals, gatherings, and celebrations.
