Huizhou culture has deep roots and is considered one of the major regional studies of China, alongside the studies of Tibet and Dunhuang. A visit to the Huangshan area is usually made of two parts: the mountain scenery on top, and the old Huizhou civilization at its foot. This day tour focuses on the second part.
Your guide, holding a "Your Way Holiday" sign, meets you at your hotel in Huangshan or at the train station, and your one-day Huizhou Ancient Town tour begins.
Leave Tunxi and drive to Shexian County, the home of Huizhou culture. The Ancient Huizhou Culture Tourism Zone centers on the old Huizhou town, once the seat of Huizhou Prefecture and one of the best-preserved old towns in China. It is often described as an open-air museum of Huizhou culture.
Inside the town, the layout is simple and old, made up of ancient bridges, towers, lanes, streets, dams, and stone memorial archways.
The first stop is Doushan Street, a historical residential street in Shexian County. It takes its name from the nearby Dou Hill and is known for the typical building style of its local houses.
Next is the Xuguo Stone Archway, a national cultural heritage site in the center of Shexian County. Built in 1584 from gravel tuff, it measures 11.56 meters long, 6.77 meters wide, and 11.4 meters high, with eight pillars. It honors Xu Guo, a grand secretary of the Ming Dynasty.
After that, visit Huizhou Garden, a modern-built garden in the Hui style. Its main structures include Rehe Tower, Deyue Tower Tea House, Huifeng Stone Archway, and an ancient opera stage, with old-style residences set among them.
In the afternoon, move on to Yuliang Dam, a well-preserved overflow stone dam found nowhere else in China. It was built by fitting solid stones together to hold back the river. The dam is 138 meters long, 27 meters wide at the base, and 4 meters wide at the top, and is now under national protection.
After the tour, your driver takes you back to your hotel in Huangshan or to the train station.
