The drive takes about 1.5 hours to Longchuan Village in Jixi County, a historic settlement in the Huizhou region of Anhui. Lying between two mountains, the 1600-year-old village has a rural setting that recalls an old Chinese landscape painting. Rows of traditional Hui-style homes line the deep, narrow alleys and give a sense of a China long forgotten.
Your first stop is the Ancestral Temple of the Hu Family, built in the mid-Ming period. It is the place where the clan honored its ancestors and decided important matters together. The temple is decorated mainly with wood carvings, and is known as a Museum of Wood Carving Art and a Palace of National Art.
After lunch, visit the Official Residence of Hu Zongxian. Hu Zongxian, who lived from 1512 to 1565 and was also known as Ruzhen or Meilin, was a celebrated military officer and senior official. During the reign of the Ming emperor Jiajing, he drove invading pirates from the eastern coast of China and restored peace to the region. He later served as Minister of National Defense and as governor of Zhejiang and Fujian, and he was the first to mark the Diaoyu Islands as part of Chinese territory.
The last stop is the Former Residence of Hushi, a typical example of ancient Hui-style architecture. There are two former residences of Hushi in China, one in Jixi County and one in Shanghai. Through the residence you can learn more about the life of Hushi and the history of Jixi.
