Your guide meets you at your hotel in central Hangzhou with a Your Way Holiday sign, and from there it is your own air-conditioned car and driver all day. Coming in from Shanghai is easy — the high-speed train takes about an hour, and first-class seats can be added as an option. Tell your guide what you want more of and the day bends to you, ending after dark at one of Hangzhou’s great shows.
The day opens on West Lake by boat, away from the shore crowds. Your guide handles the tickets and points out the Broken Bridge, the causeways and Leifeng Pagoda across the water, telling you the poets’ and lovers’ stories behind the scenery rather than a list of dates.
Next is Guo’s Garden, a classical scholar’s garden on the lake shore that most visitors have never heard of. Ponds, rockeries and pavilions sit close together in a quiet, uncrowded space, and your guide shows you how each window and bridge was placed to frame a different view.
Then out to Meijiawu, a working Longjing tea village in the hills — terraces up the slope, leaves pan-firing at the roadside. Your guide talks you through picking and roasting, and you can taste a couple of grades to hear the difference for yourself.
Lunch is two of the city’s signature plates. West Lake Sister Song Fish Soup is a silky, tangy fish broth named for two Song-dynasty sisters; Cat Ear Noodles (pian’er) are little shell-shaped noodles in a savoury broth with shrimp and greens. Your guide orders with you and explains each dish, and vegetarian or milder meals are easy to arrange if you mention it before the day.
In the afternoon, the Bamboo-lined Path at Yunqi is a shaded walk under tall bamboo just south of the lake — quiet, green and easy going, with ponds and small temples tucked along it. It is a good place to slow down before a busy evening.
Before the show, Hefang Street gives you Hangzhou’s old merchant quarter — timber shopfronts, snack stalls, tea and silk shops, and a few working craft houses. Your guide points out what is genuinely local and what is just for tourists, so you can taste a stall snack or pick a gift without the tourist markup.
The day ends on the water after dark with the Impression West Lake show, “Enduring Memories of Hangzhou” — a light-and-music performance staged on the lake itself, with the hills as its backdrop. As an official ticket agent we secure your seats, and your guide gets you to the dock in time. It is the single most memorable way to finish a Hangzhou day.
After the show your driver takes you back to your hotel in Hangzhou. If you are catching a late train back to Shanghai, tell your guide at the start of the day and you will time the evening around it.

We took the day trip from Shanghai to see the Impression West Lake show and it was worth the round trip. Daytime we did West Lake and the old town at a relaxed pace with a guide who clearly loved the city and adjusted when we wanted more time for photos. The evening show on the lake, stage built right on the water, genuinely moved us. Getting back to the drop-off was smooth, driver had us right on time so we caught the return train without sprinting. The bullet train option made it easy. Long day but a great one.

We only had one day to explore Hangzhou, and this itinerary covered all the highlights without feeling rushed. The West Lake boat cruise was such a peaceful way to start the day, followed by a stroll through Guo Garden which felt like stepping into a classical Chinese painting. Meijiawu Tea Plantation was another favorite—the peaceful atmosphere and tea tasting experience were unforgettable.
Our guide made the experience even better. She spoke excellent English and was incredibly knowledgeable about the sites. She shared interesting stories at every stop and made sure we felt relaxed and well taken care of. It was obvious she truly loved her job and her city.
The company was also very professional. They communicated quickly when we had to adjust our pickup time and were flexible with the schedule when we wanted to spend a bit more time at Hefang Street.
The driver was punctual and friendly. The car was spotless and had great air conditioning, which was a lifesaver on a hot summer day. He drove safely and smoothly throughout, and we appreciated the little touches like cold water bottles waiting for us after each stop.
