Two days is enough to get under Hangzhou skin. Your guide meets you at your hotel, the train station or the airport, and a private car handles the getting around each day, so you set the pace. Day one is a full private day in Hangzhou. Your guide meets you at your hotel, the train station or the airport - wherever you arrive - and you set off in an air-conditioned car. Tell your guide what you love most, history, temples or scenery, and the commentary and pacing flex to match.

You start on the water. A boat run takes in the causeways, the Broken Bridge and Leifeng Pagoda, while your guide sorts the legends from the history and explains how a shallow lake became a subject for painters and poets. Then a walk along the shore to see the same view from the bank.

In Huagang Park, Viewing Fish at Flower Ponds is one of the ten classic West Lake scenes - koi turning under clear water among lotus and flowers. It is a calm, easy half-hour walk and a good illustration of how a Jiangnan garden stages nature.

Guo Zhuang is a classical Hangzhou garden of pavilions, winding corridors and rockwork, once a retreat for scholars. Your guide points out how the layout borrows the lake beyond its walls and packs a surprising amount into a small footprint - a neat primer before the bigger sights.

Lingyin, the Temple of the Soul Retreat, is one of China great Zen monasteries and still a living place of worship. Its halls and the carved stone Buddhas of Feilai Feng, the Hill That Flew In, take a good while to look over; from the upper paths you get a wide view back across the temple roofs and the trees.

Lunch is at a neighbourhood table, not a coach restaurant. Two honest Hangzhou home dishes: congbao hui, pork belly stir-fried with fragrant leeks, and dingsheng gao, a soft steamed glutinous-rice cake, only lightly sweet - the kind of snack locals grew up on.

Afternoon goes west to Meijiawu, a working Longjing tea village, to watch leaves roasted in a wok and taste your way through an early and a later flush. Back toward the lake, the Yunqi bamboo path is a cool green tunnel of towering stalks - the quietest stretch of the day, and a fitting place to end it before your guide drives you to your hotel.

Day two goes local before it goes grand - an early food market, the old canal, a museum of Chinese medicine, then the modern skyline and, if you like, a night show on the lake.
Your guide starts you early at a neighbourhood wet market, the most direct way to see what Hangzhou actually eats - live seafood, mountain vegetables, pickles, spices and steamers of snacks. Your guide knows the stalls and the stories behind the dishes, and it is easy to taste your way through breakfast on the walk.

Hangzhou is the southern end of the Grand Canal, the longest man-made waterway in the world, and this stretch shows the quieter, working face of the city. Stroll the towpath to the old Gongchen Bridge and the canal-side museums, and see how grain and silk once moved clear up to Beijing.
Lunch stays on the local menu. Two Hangzhou plates to try: sauteed shrimps in oil, plump river shrimp flashed through hot oil with scallion for a glossy, fresh taste, and soy-sauce duck, jiangya, duck braised cool in soy and spice, savoury and faintly sweet.

The afternoon moves to the restored Southern Song Imperial Street and nearby Hefang Street, the old quarter of tiled shopfronts and herbalist halls. Step into the Hu Qing Yu Tang Chinese Medicine Museum, a workhouse pharmacy from the Qing Dynasty, to see brass scales, dried herbs and the whole philosophy behind them.

As the light drops, climb to Chenghuang Pavilion on Wushan Hill for the wide view over the rooftops and the lake, and watch the city come on in lights. Then over to Qianjiang New City on the far bank of the Qiantang River, where the glass towers and the light show are the modern flip side of the old town.

At the end of the day your guide drops you back at your Hangzhou hotel, or at your train station or the airport if you are moving on - whichever works for your plans.

Grand Canal Water Bus
See the canal the way locals half do, on the public water bus between the old docks - cheap, unhurried and full of everyday colour, a nice contrast to the private car.
Impression West Lake Show
Cap a Hangzhou evening with the Enduring Memories of Hangzhou show, an open-air spectacle set on the lake itself - dancers, light and fishing floats against the hills, staged by the Zhang Yimou team.
West Lake Musical Fountain
Near the Broken Bridge, the lakeside musical fountain throws choreographed jets of water to music on weekend evenings - free, lively, and a favourite thing for locals to do after dinner.

Two days let us see Hangzhou without a stopwatch. Day one was West Lake, day two the tea villages and Xixi wetland. Our guide Amy kept steering us to quieter spots, a small teahouse behind the bustle, a canal walk most tourists walk past. She adjusted the plan when we said we were tired, cutting one stop and adding a lakeside coffee. Meals were local and honest, one dinner had lotus-root and water-shield soup from the lake itself. Same driver both days, careful and friendly. Felt like traveling with a friend who lives there.

Amy has a real talent for finding the quiet edges of Hangzhou, glad she got you to that little teahouse and the canal most people walk straight past. Two unhurried days is honestly the sweet spot for the city. Thanks Rachel.

As someone who loves nature, this tour was perfect for me! West Lake is just as beautiful as everyone says, and the West Lake Boat Cruise was the ideal way to explore its tranquil beauty. The guide shared fascinating facts about the lake's ecosystem, and I loved learning how the locals cherish and protect it. Lingyin Temple was a peaceful retreat, and I enjoyed walking through the serene gardens and appreciating the ancient statues. The visit to Meijiawu Tea Plantation was the highlight for me, as I got to wander through the lush green tea fields while learning about the region’s tea culture. After finishing a business trip, I booked a two-day trip to Hangzhou. As a first-time visitor to Hangzhou, it was a completely different and wonderful experience than before!
The booking process is seamlessly connected, with clear communication at every step. Even before entering Hangzhou, I felt at ease and well-informed. After arriving, I was warmly welcomed by Iris, who was an outstanding tour guide for my trip. From the beginning, Iris exuded enthusiasm and professionalism, making me immediately feel relaxed in this unfamiliar city.
Our first day was filled with unforgettable experiences. Iris skillfully guided me through the peaceful West Lake cruise, charming flower pond for fish watching, tranquil Guo Garden, and awe inspiring Lingyin Temple. However, it was the visit to Meijiawu Tea Plantation that left a deep impression on me, with its beautiful scenery and profound cultural heritage. The bamboo forest path in Yunqi is another highlight, providing people with a peaceful natural journey.
At the end of the day, although I was physically tired, I gained a new understanding and deep appreciation of Hangzhou's cultural heritage, and felt very uplifted spiritually. Iris's rich information and captivating storytelling truly enrich the experience.
The next day, I began to explore the vibrant morning wet market, and Iris introduced me to the local cuisine and bustling market life. Then, we embarked on a historical journey along the Grand Canal and Gongcheng Bridge, followed by a visit to the Southern Song Dynasty Imperial Street, where Iris cleverly explained the historical significance of the area.
The most inspiring stop was the Hu Qingyutang Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum, where Iris shared her fascinating insights into traditional therapies. Visiting the City God Pavilion is the perfect ending to my trip to Hangzhou. As the sun began to set, the sky was painted in shades of orange and pink, and the panoramic view from the pavilion was simply breathtaking. From this advantageous location, I can see the urban landscape extending in front of me, with Hangzhou's iconic landmarks clearly outlined under the colorful sky.
In short, this two-day trip was worth it. I strongly recommend Iris and her team because they provide excellent service and warm hospitality. They really made my visit to Hangzhou unforgettable, and I am deeply grateful for the memories they created.
